DUDE. So, I've been given The Forbidden Forest (Chapter 15 PS/SS) as my chapter for the HP Art Project, and I was just double checking heights and looks and stuff of Harry, Hermione, Draco and Neville, because that's who I'm drawing... and...
Did anyone realise that JKR said Neville is BLOND?!!
0.o WHUT?!
I HAVE BEEN SO BRAINWASHED BY THOSE MOVIES, MAN. LOLOL. I was SO SURE he was canon brunette. Srsly.
Oh and I was watching some M*A*S*H* the other day, and Colonel Potter (no less! LOL) said, "SILENCIO!!!" at one point!!!!!!!!! OMFGGGGGGG GEEK OVERLOAD XDDDDD
I swear these Chinese gymnasts are four years old, man, srsly. LOLOL.

Ms. ROWLING: [...] Now, to me, Neville's short and plump and blond, but that's what's great about books. You know, she's just seeing something different. People bring their own imagination to it. They have to collaborate with the author on creating the world.

Where is that quote from? I don't believe it.

And I must say, I agree about those Chinese gymnasts. Most of them are my sister's age (9) or just slightly older. Definately not 16.
no subject
Holy crap, they're 16?!?!?! I thought they were like 12 and just looked young!! LOLOL. If I had to have a guess, I'd say the youngest one there would be 8 or 9 years old. Srsly. LOL XD

I just googled them, and apparently the New York Times is reporting that there is speculation (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/27/sports/olympics/27gymnasts.html) about their ages.
I wouldn't be surprised. I'd be far likely to believe that they're 14 and not 16.

Well, he must be doing a good job because he's one of the only actors I see CLEARLY in my head (including his voice!) when I read the books XD

Ehhhh... >.> I'm on the side of not thinking that Rupert does a particularly brilliant job ^^; LOL. Maybe that's because I really like book!Ron and HATE movie!Ron, LOLOL :D

Heh, no kidding. Sorry, but there are body and facial changes that come with puberty, and most of them haven't gotten there. Even slow development of curves isn't going to change the facial progression! (I don't know if you get any of our commentary down there, but Bela Karolyi was on with Bob Costas, and just said, absolutely matter-of-fact, "Oh, yes, of course, half the Chinese team is underage, but you can't prove it, so oh, well." He's against the age restriction in the first place and respected the team, but he just basically said, "Duh. Who do they think they're kidding?") It would be petty for another team to complain, and the time for the IOC to do it is over. I wouldn't want a medal that we'd only have by disqualifying the best competition, anyway.
JKR never described Neville as blond in the books, and the quote seems to imply that she doesn't care that much, so if you want a brunette Neville, I think it would work.
no subject
Yeah. I thought that too. But I'm sending this to JKR, so I'd like it to be as close to her vision as possible :D And I'm a blasphemer in the HP community in that I really couldn't give a tinker's toss one way or the other about Neville, so I don't care. LOLOLOL XDDDD

Of course, the younger ages favor totalitarian countries with sports machines that pick up three year olds and start training them, so they're at their peak at thirteen or so. Take a country that can't enforce this and doesn't have the authority to just grab a kid, and training will start later. (This isn't just because the government can't do it by fiat--there's a different culture, which says that children perpetually have a choice, and toddlers don't have a naturally great attention span. By the time they're school age, we're more willing to say, "Hey, stick with it," but even then, we're more likely to let them out if they feel like it.)
My bigger problem in particular is that, arbitrary rule or not, some teams are following it and others aren't. Maybe we left a really talented thirteen-year-old at home. Maybe Japan did as well. Which means that China was using its entire resource pool for talent, while we restricted it.

Yeah, those Chinese girls have to be underage. We're not stupid, China.

Well, as a blonde myself, I can't say I mind having the Malfoys on our side XDDD

Hmm. I don't think I'd be able to ignore canon 0.o Even for Tom :x D: LOLOLOL.
And yeah. The Phelps twins are way too skinny and tall to be the Weasley twins in canon. They're like Ron shaped and not Fred and George shaped XDDD

Hmm I could've sworn some of those Chinese girls look about 12 too. You have to remember though that Asians in general look young... I'm twenty and people constantly think I'm seventeenish. Which isn't that much of a difference I know, but it's about the difference between sixteen and twelve :) But yeah, one of the girls looks like she's eight. I didn't know there was an age limit!
no subject
Oh, I know, don't get me wrong, I have heaps of Asian (admittedly Japanese and Malaysian) friends from college and they all look a lot younger than they are... but at least one of those girls looks to be 8-10 years old. At the most that'd mean she'd be 13 going by your guesstimate, LOL :D I wasn't aware there was a limit either! Go figure. LOL.

I get really confused when people show him with blond hair but thin that to me = Draco. (Or maybe Zacharias Smith.) I nearly flipped (not in a good way) when I saw a picture of some skinny, blond dude taking out Nagini but it turned out to be a rather skinny, anime-pointy Neville.

I've always pictured Pansy blonde because Draco is the child of perfect pureblood breeding and Lucius and Narcissa are both blond so it seems really logical that he would either be drawn to or told that he should get together with someone of the same hair color persuasion.
Now, all this interview ish also doesn't get digested properly and people forget how to read and are unable of applying what she says to what canon says.
For example, over in sorting someone mentioned on an application that children conceived under Love Potions make them incapable of love. BUZZZZ! Time out, that is never said in the books.
I questioned where they heard that from and they in turn quoted an interview where JKR says that the potion is symbolic. No matter what way you shake it Riddle grew up without a nurturing influence so why would he ever be able to understand/comprehend an emotion as complex and simple as love w/o that exposure? His mom never really knew love either, he was pretty much SOL from the start. But that can all be derived from canon, you don't need her clarification in an interview to get that. So all this extra stuff does nothing but muddy the waters.
Except for the question I asked her about what happens to the dark marks after Volde's defeat in the live chat after DH dropped. That is not fluff xD

Oh my, the Chinese gymnasts do look really young. I know that not everyone looks the same at 16 and that gymnasts tend to be of smaller stature...but a few of them look like they're 10!
